From Prompt to Part - AI Assisted CAD & CAM Optimization | AI/ML for Modern Manufacturing
This was a short project where I prompted ChatGPT to generate instructions for recreating a part in openSCAD and then used Fusion 360 to automate the manufacturing process
openSCAD & Toolpath: I gave ChatGPT a detailed description of what the part looked like, including any dimensions, chamfers, and after a few iterations, I was able to recreate the part in openSCAD. I used that CAD file in Fusion 360 optimize the manufacturing process by replacing the adaptive clearing operation with a 2D contour operation, which reduced unnecessary Z- level transitions for this specific geometry. I also used the full flute length with reduced radial engagement to prevent torque spikes in the corners of the part.
Impact & Reflection: This was my first introduction to CAM and automated manufacturing and I saw that even with small changes a significant time drop is seen (even if it is on the scale of seconds). Generating the CAD also only took me a few seconds. The geometry is simple, but this project highlighted the direction that the design process is headed in, and it places emphasis on the underlying engineering concepts rather than stressing the intricacies of CAD and CAM software.
