Hi, I’m Yohannes Legesse

To most, I am a mechanical design engineer with a strong passion for user-centred product design; at heart, I am a kid from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, who grew to love physics, mechanical engineering, & solving problems. Over the years, I have obtained experience in additive manufacturing, creating lithography-compatible parts, developing assistive technology, and using AI tools to optimize the design process. Thank you for visiting my portfolio, and I hope you find my projects as interesting as I did.

Experience

Mechanical Design Engineer Intern (May - August 2025)

As part of the reticle handler team, I helped support ASML’s transition from the industry-standard 6×6-inch photomask to a larger 6×12-inch size by designing a baseplate that enables handling of the photomask through robot arm handoffs in the various lithography stages, including the in-vacuum library and reticle stage.

  • Implemented kinematic coupling concepts for high accuracy and repeatability at a micron level, which reduces alignment time and the overall time required to print a chip

  • Tipping was prevented under expected loads (~15N max) to ensure the safety of the photomask during robot arm handoffs, especially during the reticle stage, when the photomask is removed from the baseplate

  • Modeled a secondary concept that simulated a four-point contact while avoiding overconstraint. This allowed for greater support against a tipping failure mode while theoretically maintaining comparable reapatibility to a 3-point contact. I created this design in the case that increased tipping loads were expected in the future.

  • Developed CAD models and drawings that used GD&T callouts for precision manufacturing and documentation using Siemens NX

Relevant Skills & Concepts Used: Kinematic Coupling, Precision Design, High-NA EUV Lithography, Siemens NX, GD&T

I was a part of two projects during my internship at Siemens. The first was in a Data Analyst creating a dashboard role for the Business Development team, and the second was an intern group project testing a topography optimization software.

Project 1 - Data Analytics:

  • Developed a Salesforce dashboard to track data over 100,000+ newly built homes across 90+ divisions, with more than 30+ contracting companies

  • Enabled real-time reporting from Siemens contacts across the various divisions by adding information entry points in the dashboard. This allows for faster updating of information across divisions, which is critical for sales representatives who constantly meet with contractors and homebuilders.

  • Created a tutorial portfolio for the dashboard so others can update the existing information, and the dashboard can continue to meet the needs of the team

Project 2 -Topography Optimization Research:

  • Evaluated Altair Inspire’s topography optimization capabilities and its potential use for Siemens products by maximizing stiffness on an enclosure door for a circuit breaker housing

  • Reported on the workflow of the software and capabilities of increasing stiffness while noting limitations in the manufacturability of the optimized geometry to aid the team as they plan to integrate the software

Relevant Skills & Concepts Used: Topography Optimization, Salesforce, Data Analytics, Creo, Altair Inspire, DFM, Technical Documentation

Engineering Leadership Development Program Intern (May - August 2024)

Education & Future Plans

I graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with an M.S. in mechanical engineering in May 2026 and a B.S. in the same field in May 2025. I am currently pursuing mechanical design engineer roles that leverage and challenge my skill set, with the ultimate goal of continuing to grow as an engineer and creating user-centered solutions. In the meantime, I am studying to obtain my EIT certification, as I plan to become a licensed PE later in my career.

Recent Coursework: (1) Mechanical Behavior of Engineering Materials, (2) Additive Manufacturing Lab, (3) AI/ML for Modern Manufacturing, (4) Applied FEA (ANSYS Workbench)
